Conservative Councillor

Working for the people of Stroud and Chalford

Flooding

18/2/2014

Debbie has been out and about during the recent spate of flooding, checking water level and noting potential problems, local residents asked her to invite local MP Neil Carmichael  down to look at the issues. So today Debbie and local residents took Neil and Chas Fellows on a tour of the problems on both the canal and river. Local residents have come up with a solution and Debbie, Chas and Neil have committed to work with local residents to see if there is a potential permanent solution. This will need to involve the Environment Agency, so there is unlikely to be a quick fix.
Debbie said "Local residents have come up with a great solution and we all need to work together to achieve it. It will take a long time but the idea is sensible and achievable"

Repairs to The Old Common

17/2/2014

Last year Debbie was asked to sort out the posts which were falling down on The Old Common. The problem was, the land was owned by Stroud District Council and they didn't want to replace the posts. Residents and Parish Council did, and the Parish didn't want to spend money on land that wasn't theirs. Debbie brokered a deal in which the District and Parish Council split the costs and Reach was used to provide free labour. Reach is an organisation which promotes community payback, whereby those convicted of crimes work free of charge to help the community. After a long frustrating 10 months work has now begun.
Debbie said "It took about 10 minutes to broker the deal but 10  long months later it has finally happened, thanks to a lot of hard work from the Parish Council Clerk"

Chalford Cubed

16/2/2014

Chalford Cubed are the Chalford Youth Forum which was set up last year. One of the things they identified through a survey of other young people, was that of litter. So 6 young people plus Debbie and fellow Chalford Councillor Chas Fellows went out on a litter pick with Debbie's daughter and Neighbourhood Warden Dominic Everiss.
2 hours later and 8 bags of rubbish, plus many favourable comments from residents saw the 1st Chalford Cubed Litter Pick complete.

Debbie said "It is great that young people want to get engaged to help their community. I am really keen to support them, and today was an excellent example of having fun and promoting our villages"

Read the Signs

12/2/2014

Debbie snapped this whilst crossing the A419 last week. Perhaps the sign saying "unsuitable for vehicle over 7.5 tonnes" restricted the lorries progress.

Debbie said "not sure what suffered the most damage, the lorry or the sign, HGV drivers really must stop relying so much on Sat Nav. Even if the vehicle has made it onto Old Neighbourhood, it certainly wouldn't  have made it up the rest of the road"
