With the help of lots of people Debbie organised the school fete raising £425.00 for the Friends of Severn View. There were cake baking and decorating competitions, teas and cakes, tombola, and visits from the Fire Brigade and the Ecotricity car and Forest Green Rovers mascot.
The canal in Chalford is a lovely feature for walkers with its towpath and historic buildings. 7 years ago it was a different story when serious floods caused the canal to over top and flood the iconic Round House and narrowly avoid Damien Hursts property a grade 1* listed building. Councillor Chas Fellows worked his magic with bureaucracy to get the pond at the Round House cleared. Over time the canal has again become silted up, with large amounts of weed and reed which have slowed the flow to a trickle and causing a flooding risk yet again. Working with Steve Pickover from the Cotswold Canal Trust, Debbie has helped to reduce this risk. By employing an amphibious vehicle to clear the channel the nearby houses are safe from flooding thanks to funding from the County Council and help from Chalford Parish Councils.
Feed me this Summer is a campaign by Rob Rees, the Cotswold Chef to provide food for those families who normally get free school meals during term time. Debbie arranged for Severn View Primary to be the location for Stroud and has seen over 200 people fed so far this holiday. Governors, parents and staff have helped out setting up tables, tidying up and encouraging people to come along. Aswell as arranging for the food and location, Debbie also asked the Credit Union, Housing Benefits, and Neighbourhood Wardens to come along to offer money and savings advice. Play Rangers have also been able to come and provide a fun filled day of food related activities for the children, thanks in part to a grant from Stroud Town Council. The events will continue to run through the rest of August.
Debbie helps out at the Frithwood Community Café every 6-8 weeks. The café which raises money for the local Youth Club is each Wednesday from 10.15 to 12.00 and allows local people to meet up for drinks and homemade cakes. This was Arthur's 80th birthday with a cake made by Carole who runs the café. anybody can come along or volunteers. Debbie said Debbie went to the 40th Anniversary of Stratford Park Leisure Centre in June, as she had been responsible for the tendering of the new contract back in 2009 and before she became the Cabinet Member for Housing. The event which featured memorabilia from the past 40 years was complemented by music, stalls and activities in the grounds.
